How to Get Around Wallis and Futuna

Inter-island travel in Wallis and Futuna is available via scheduled domestic flights between Wallis and Futuna, operated with small aircraft and arranged through local travel agencies.

Flights typically depart from Hihifo Airport on Wallis and take approximately 1 hour to Futuna’s airport. There are no regular ferry services between the islands, making air travel the primary method of inter-island transport.

On Wallis itself, getting around is straightforward with rental cars available in Mata’Utu, as well as local taxis for shorter trips. Road networks circle the lagoon and provide easy access to beaches, villages and historical sites.

On Futuna, transport options are more limited but rental vehicles and guided trips can be arranged for exploring the island.

Travel Times On/From Futuna

The Futuna and neighbouring Alofi are remote yet deeply rewarding destinations in Wallis and Futuna. Futuna is typically accessed via domestic flights from Wallis, landing at Pointe Vele Airport on the island’s southeast coast. Alofi, which has an inhabitant of one, is reached by taxi boats from Futuna, weather permitting.

Once on land, travel options are limited to rental vehicles, accommodation transfers where available, or walking, as infrastructure is minimal and villages are small.

How Long Does it Take to Travel Around Futuna?

Like Wallis, it takes approximately 45 minutes to drive the coastal road around Futuna, covering roughly 32 km (20 mi).

The mainly sealed but pothole-heavy road follows much of the island’s perimeter, passing through villages such as Leava and Poï. At the time of writing, the road was closed at Pyramid Point (Utu Magalua), making the full island circuit impossible. However, it was close to completion and could now well be open.

Alofi has no roads or permanent transport services. Exploring the island is done entirely on foot after arriving by boat.
