Fun Facts About Hihifo Airport
Hihifo Airport has quite the wartime history! Originally built by U.S. Navy Seabees in 1942 following the occupation of Wallis, the airport served as a strategic bomber base during World War Two. The Americans constructed a 1,829 m (6,000 ft) runway using local volcanic ash and clay, complete with hangars, fuel tanks, and underground magazines to support heavy bomber operations against Japanese forces.
After the war ended in 1946, the facility transitioned from military to civilian use under French oversight, and remarkably, some of the original American-installed infrastructure, including drainage pipes, wasn't replaced until a "facelift" initiative in 1964, nearly 20 years later!

Pointe Vele Airport (VLE)
Pointe Vele Airport (VLE) is a public airport located in Vele, a village on the island of Futuna. With no regular ferry schedules or any other real means of transportation, the airport serves as the vital lifeline to one of the most remote islands in the Pacific!
For a South Pacific island runway, Pointe Vele Airport is impressively well-maintained. It features one paved runway measuring 1,100 m Ă 25 m (3,609 ft Ă 82 ft), providing adequate space for the regional aircraft that serve this remote destination. On the other hand, the airport sits at an elevation of a mere 6 m (20 ft) above mean sea level, having been built onto the reef.
Facilities at Pointe Vele Airport
Pointe Vele Airport maintains basic but essential facilities for travellers. The airport features a small terminal building providing shelter, basic passenger services and essential amenities for those travelling to and from this far-flung Pacific island.
Given the remote location of Futuna, airport transfers are typically arranged through accommodation providers or local contacts prior to arrival.
