Passport or French ID for Entering Wallis and Futuna

One of the most essential travel documents you need for Wallis and Futuna is, of course, your passport. Alternatively, a valid French ID card is acceptable for entry (however, you'll probably find that a passport is usually required to transit through other countries apart from New Caledonia).

Passports from all countries are accepted for visiting Wallis and Futuna, though nationals from around 120 countries will need to apply for the short-stay visa first via the France-Visa website. For most of us, a short-stay visa is granted upon arrival.

Passports must be less than 10 years old and valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave Wallis and Futuna. In other words, the date that you state on your Passenger Arrival Card.

Oh, and your passport needs to have at least two blank sheets.

Do You Need a Visa?

Being a French collectivity, Wallis and Futuna follows roughly the same visa requirements as France. A short-stay visa is automatically granted upon entry for nationals of 91 countries, as long as you meet the entry requirements. For nationals from non-exempt countries, you are required to apply for a visa before arrival.

Wallis and Futuna Passenger Arrival Card

During or after your flight to Wallis and Futuna, airline staff will hand out the Wallis and Futuna Passenger Arrival Card for you to complete and give to Customs on arrival.

The travel documents already discussed in the guide, such as your passport and flight boarding pass, will provide you with all the information you need to complete the Arrival Card.

Passenger Arrival Card Format and Language

The form is bilingual (French and English) and clearly formatted with checkboxes and fill-in sections. Instructions specify to use capital letters with one letter per box, and passengers must sign the completed form.

Health Questions

You'll need to declare if you've experienced fever, cough, breathing difficulties, diarrhoea, vomiting or muscle/joint pain in the past 7 days. The card also asks about yellow fever vaccination status, which you can learn more about in Do You Need Vaccines to Travel to Wallis & Futuna?

Accommodation Details

You must provide your specific place of residence or hotel in Wallis & Futuna (P.O. boxes are not accepted), plus a local phone number or WhatsApp contact.

Biosecurity Declarations

The most extensive section covers biosecurity, requiring you to declare whether you're carrying:

  • Food of any kind
  • Animals (alive or dead) or animal products (meat, dairy, honey, feathers, shells, etc.)
  • Plant products (fruits, vegetables, seeds, flowers, wood, etc.)
  • Used camping or sports equipment
  • Veterinary or agricultural products

The form advises, "If you're not sure, declare Yes" - false declarations can result in legal action and immediate seizure of undeclared goods.

You'll also need to indicate if you've visited rural areas, farms or had contact with livestock in the past 30 days, and specify which countries, if applicable.

Tourism Information

Finally, a separate section collects visitor statistics including trip purpose, accommodation type, travel companions, and length of stay - useful data that helps local authorities understand tourism patterns.

Other Travel Documents You May Need for Wallis and Futuna

All of the documents detailed above are mandatory for travel to Wallis and Futuna unless stated otherwise. The following travel documents and paperwork are optional or only apply to specific situations.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance ensures financial cover in the event that travel plans need to be changed, theft or loss of personal items, or you need medical attention, etc.

Travel insurance policies cover (and don't cover) a range of circumstances where you otherwise might have significant expenses.

The only time where you may be required to have travel insurance, which covers medical expenses, is if diving with certain "scuba associations", particularly in Futuna - learn more in The Best Dive Shops & Operators in Wallis & Futuna.

The most comprehensive travel protection we've found is Global Rescue, which not only offers insurance policy add-ons but actually does the repatriation work themselves.

Either way, travel insurance is a personal decision, so if you decide to go for it, make sure you have your policy paperwork and certificate.

Driver's Licence (and International Driving Permit)

If you want to hire a vehicle in Wallis and Futuna, then you're going to need your valid overseas driver's licence.

Check out Can You Drive in Wallis & Futuna With an Overseas Licence? to see what driver's licences are accepted in Wallis and Futuna.

Medical Prescription

If you are bringing more than 30 days' worth of prescription medication, you are required to have a doctor's note describing the medication and the reason for the extended supply. For travellers from non-French or non-English speaking countries, the doctor's note must be translated into French.

Medical Certificate

A requirement of scuba diving in Futuna with the local scuba diving association is that you have a medical certificate that is less than one year old.
