Can You Camp in Wallis and Futuna?

Motu Location
from NZ$120/night
If you're looking for another way to keep costs low whilst having an adventurous experience, camping might be just what you need.
You can't just pitch your tent anywhere in Wallis and Futuna, though. You'll need permission first, which is part of respecting local customs and land rights.
The most popular places to camp are the motu (islets) around Wallis and Alofi Island near Futuna. You'll find more details about the latter in our "Loka Cave Campsite" section below.
For the Wallis motu, your best bet is the eastern and northern islets. Local taxi boat providers can arrange overnight trips and will sort out the permission on your behalf, making the whole process much easier.
We recommend offering a small gift to show your appreciation, such as a bottle of wine or something special from your home country. Even with this gesture, you'll still spend considerably less than any of the budget accommodation options we've listed so far.
When you're on the motu, steer clear of any concrete structures as these are private property. However, the traditional fale shelters are fair game for camping.
Remember to bring everything you need for your camping adventure and take everything away with you when you leave. Leave no trace, as they say!
6.Loka Beach Campsite (Futuna)
-SEB%20CREDIT%20WallisandFutunaPocketGuide.com-900x601.webp?v=2026-04-07T00%3A46%3A25.851Z)
Secluded on the shores of Alofi Island, Loka Beach Campsite offers an authentic wilderness camping experience at one of the most remote locations covered in our Best Walks in Wallis & Futuna.
This dedicated camping area provides a couple of traditional fales for shelter, though you'll need to bring your own mat and mosquito net for a comfortable stay.
The campsite requires permission from the local chief, which can be arranged through your guides or operators like Taxi Boat Afala from Vele Village (a bottle of wine makes an appropriate gift when requesting permission). We're also told that the chief never says "no".
The natural swimming pool just around the point from Loka Beach transforms into a coral wonderland during low tide, whilst low tide also reveals excellent rock fishing spots along the coastline.
Fresh water is available from nearby Loka Cave (be sure to treat it before drinking).
For budget travellers, this represents one of the most affordable accommodation options in the region, requiring only camping gear, boat transport and a small gift for the chief.
Northeast coast of Alofi. The start of the trail is accessible from Alofitai Beach, which in turn is accessible by boat from Vele Boat Landing, Vele, the northeast coast of Futuna. Trails are well formed behind the ceremonial fales or along the coast at the eastern end of the beach.
