The Best Accommodations and Places to Stay in Wallis and Futuna?

Remote coral atolls far-flung across the vast blue Pacific Ocean, yet home to distinct natural beauty and even more distinct cultures, Wallis and Futuna provides something unique for those looking to get well and truly off the beaten track.

Although there are three main islands in this French collectivity, Wallis (Uvea) stands out as the most populated, home to 15 islets dotting a lagoon and the majority of residents. The distant Futuna and Alofi islands offer their own charms with proud chapels and traditional fales backed by bush-clad mountains.

This French territory in the South Pacific intrigues visitors with its Polynesian-French fusion culture, which is far far far less explored than the nearby islands of New Caledonia and Tahiti. All you have to do is find a place to stay in Wallis and Futuna...

Luckily, we can help you there, not only listing Wallis and Futuna's best accommodations but by location, so you can find the best islands to stay.

Accommodation in Wallis (Uvea)

If you're looking for a destination that feels like a well-kept secret, Wallis (also known as Uvea) is the place.

The island is divided into three distinct districts: Hihifo in the north, Hahake in the centre, and Mu'a in the south. Most travellers base themselves in Hahake, where the tiny capital Mata'Utu sits, and you'll find the majority of accommodations. But don't overlook the other districts. There's a wonderful selection of more secluded stays that offer incredible locations away from it all.

Wallis' main appeal is its lagoon, encircling the island and dotted with around 15 stunning motu (islets). "Taxi boats" can whisk you away to these little slices of paradise, where you can spend your days snorkelling in gin-clear waters, beachcombing for treasures, or learning traditional skills like weaving and husking coconuts from local guides.

The island's fascinating history unfolds before your eyes through some of the most magnificent cathedrals in the South Pacific (the population is almost 100% Catholic) and what's considered the best-preserved Tongan fort anywhere in the world.

With a tourism industry that's in its infancy, needless to say, don't expect the same hospitality and services as you would in many other Pacific destinations. But determined travellers will find plenty to love on the island of Wallis.

Accommodation in Futuna

Beach Tavai Futuna Landscape SEB CREDIT WallisandFutunaPocketGuide.com
© WallisandFutunaPocketGuide.com

At the end of the road, Futuna is only reachable by direct flight from Wallis, and it's an island that likes to keep it that way. This peaceful paradise enjoys a tranquil existence where the culture shares more similarities with Samoa than it does Wallis, and you'll find it's proudly distinct.

For example, each giant Catholic church faces its fale tauasu, where local men gather to drink kava during the evening, a tradition that gives you a glimpse into authentic island life.

Futuna is split into two kingdoms: the Kingdom of Sigave in the north and the Kingdom of Alo in the south. Its historical sites, including coral slab tombs and the rock oven of Fai'umu o Papa, reflect a tumultuous past of chieftains and royalty that you'll find fascinating to explore.

The aspect locals are most proud of is the Poï Basilica, located on the spot where Saint Pierre Chanel, the patron saint of Oceania, was assassinated. They have a magnificent basilica, chapel and museum to commemorate this.

Beyond the culture and history, Futuna offers incredible snorkelling, though it's definitely "sportif" as the reef plateaus drop dramatically into the Pacific Ocean with little protection. From what we've experienced, the underwater world here is absolutely spectacular if you're up for the challenge.

Across the channel from Vele is Futuna's natural crown jewel, Alofi Island, with its endless white-sand beaches, safe snorkelling and cross-island hikes.

When it comes to where to stay, we've found that the hotels offer the best facilities and services; actually better than the hotels in Wallis. The homestays can be a little rough around the edges, especially considering the price, but they do offer a more intimate experience if that's what you're after.

There's free WiFi, and a homemade breakfast is included. The hotel's restaurant serves lunch from 11:30 am to 2 pm and dinner from 7 pm to 10 pm, with reservations recommended. The bar operates from 6 pm Tuesday to Friday, and Friday nights come alive with dance parties running from 11:30 pm until the early hours.

This dedicated camping area provides a couple of traditional fales for shelter, though you'll need to bring your own mat and mosquito net for a comfortable stay.

The campsite requires permission from the local chief, which can be arranged through your guides or operators like Taxi Boat Afala from Vele Village (a bottle of wine makes an appropriate gift when requesting permission). We're also told that the chief never says "no".

The natural swimming pool just around the point from Loka Beach transforms into a coral wonderland during low tide, whilst low tide also reveals excellent rock fishing spots along the coastline.

Fresh water is available from nearby Loka Cave (be sure to treat it before drinking).
