Accommodation in Leava (Kingdom of Sigave)

Leava is located in the Sigave kingdom and serves as Futuna's main centre, and you'll quickly discover why it's the heart of island life. This waterfront hub, alongside the neighbouring Nuku village, is where you'll find most of the island's shops, restaurants and government buildings all clustered together near the wharf.

The location makes perfect sense when you realise that Leava is home to the island's only proper anchorage for yachts and boats. It's no surprise, then, that some of Futuna's limited accommodation options have set up shop right here, making it the logical base for visitors looking to explore this remote corner of the Pacific.

More About Staying in Leava

What is Leava good for? Watersports like outrigger paddling and proximity to shops and restaurants.

What to do there? Tautai Taxi Boat, Avamoana Futuna, Vilamalia Viewpoint, Lotuma Trail and more - see the 20 Best Things to Do on Futuna.

Where to eat? Snack Non Stop, Hotel Fiafia and more - see The Food Guide to Futuna.

Hotel Fiafia sits in Nuku, just five minutes' drive from Leava and a winner at balancing comfort with character.

The hotel's standout feature has to be its eccentrically decorated rooms, accessed via a charming spiral staircase that sets the scene for the unique experience ahead. Premium rooms are adorned with antiques, religious relics and some even feature stained glass windows, including the famous "Napoleon Room" where every surface is covered in collectable items.

But you don't have to sleep among antiques if you don't want to; there are a variety of accommodation options across the nine rooms. Choose from three suites, four sea-view rooms, or two budget-friendly rooms with shared bathroom facilities on the landing. Premium rooms come with comprehensive amenities including safes, tea and coffee-making facilities, bathrobes, TV, mini-refrigerator and complimentary WiFi, making them the most well-equipped hotel rooms in Futuna. Basic rooms offer essential comforts with fridges, hanging space for clothes, and WiFi access.

Thoughtful touches include complimentary breakfast and WiFi throughout, plus airport transfer services and the option for guided tours of Futuna's major historic sites.

The on-site restaurant operates Monday to Saturday with advance booking required for dining, though takeaway pizzas are available without reservation. Sundays are reserved exclusively for in-house guests, with special dishes often including fresh fish and rabbit.

Accommodation on Alofi

Accommodation on the uninhabited island of Alofi? How so?!

Lodging on Futuna's "other island" isn't as straightforward as it sounds. The only way to stay on Alofi is to camp there, but it is possible by seeking out the right permission, as we explain in the "Loka Cave Campsite" listing below.

But why would you want to camp on Alofi?

If you like the idea of a multi-day hike, galivanting through the forest from one glorious beach to the next, passing archaeological sites, scouting out caves and the feeling of having an entire island to oneself, then that's exactly why you should stay on Alofi Island. Oh, and it's affordable.

More About Staying on Alofi

What's Alofi good for? Hiking, swimming, snorkelling, beaches, wildlife, history and more.

What to do there? Alofitai Beach, Ganiu Beach, Sa'avaka Beach, Loka Beach, L'Aquarium, Fatu Anusia, Mt Kolofau, Filisia, Vai Tagata Fafine, Atu Tanoa, Tufu Matavili, Ana and Lulu caves, Fale Tafola’a and more - see A Self-Guided Day Trip on Alofi: One Day Itinerary.

Where to eat? Bring all the supplies you'll need with you (and take any rubbish back with you) - see A Guide to Supermarkets & Food Shopping in Wallis & Futuna.

The main place where visitors are permitted to camp on Alofi, Loka Cave Campsite on the beach in the next bay from Loka Cave, is well-equipped for easy tropical camping.

This dedicated camping area provides a couple of traditional fales for shelter, though you'll need to bring your own mat and mosquito net for a comfortable stay.

The campsite requires permission from the local chief, which can be arranged through your guides or operators like Taxi Boat Afala from Vele Village (a bottle of wine makes an appropriate gift when requesting permission). We're also told that the chief never says "no".

The natural swimming pool just around the point from Loka Beach transforms into a coral wonderland during low tide, whilst low tide also reveals excellent rock fishing spots along the coastline.

Fresh water is available from nearby Loka Cave (be sure to treat it before drinking).

Location:

Northeast coast of Alofi. The start of the trail is accessible from Alofitai Beach, which in turn is accessible by boat from Vele Boat Landing, Vele, the northeast coast of Futuna. Trails are well formed behind the ceremonial fales or along the coast at the eastern end of the beach.
