Wallis is the easiest island in Wallis and Futuna for food shopping, with the territory’s best choice of supermarkets, 24-hour convenience stores and restaurants. Self-catering is definitely possible, especially if you are staying somewhere with a kitchen, but do keep in mind that prices are high due to freight costs and many shops close for 2 to 3 hours over lunch.

Wallis is home to the territory’s largest supermarkets, where you’ll find the best variety of groceries, imported goods, frozen foods, deli items, baguettes, fresh produce and household essentials. Opening hours are typically from around 6 am to 12 pm, then 2 pm to 7 pm Monday to Saturday, with shorter opening hours on Sunday. Exact hours vary by store.

The main supermarkets on Wallis are:

Communication Services in Wallis

When it comes to staying connected, we recommend making use of your accommodation's free WiFi, which will be a darn sight cheaper than using the local phone network. Regardless, if you need to stay connected throughout your visit, there is a local phone network with data plans. There is also a post office in Mata'Utu, which is incidentally where you'll find the phone network office, as well as a WiFi hotspot in an emergency.

Phone Network

There is only one phone network in Wallis and Futuna, Manuia, which is operated by the Service des Postes et Télécommunications (SPT). SIM cards and initial data plans can be purchased from the SPT office in Mata'Utu (just down the road from the cathedral and wharf), open from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

Most convenience stores offer top-up vouchers once you've made that initial SIM card purchase. Learn more about the network, prices and coverage in The Best SIM Card in Wallis & Futuna for Travellers.

Post Offices

Wallis' main post office is in its capital and is run by SPT. Services include postage stamps, domestic and international mail, passport photos and more. Next door is the Philatélie office. Opening hours are typically from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

There is also a post office in Hihifo, located opposite the Église Saint Pierre et Saint Paul.

Internet and WiFi

Free access to the internet and WiFi is limited in Wallis, mostly offered by hotels and accommodations. Otherwise, WiFi options include:

  • Hihifo International Airport, Mala'e, Hihifo
  • Service des Postes et Télécommunications (SPT), Bord de Mer, Mata'Utu, Hahake
