Road Transport in Wallis and Futuna

The first road transport you'll encounter on each of the islands you visit is your airport transfer. This must be booked in advance with your accommodation or get your rental vehicle delivered to the airport.

Interisland Transport in Wallis and Futuna

The primary way to get between the island of Wallis and the island of Futuna is via domestic flights. Flights to Futuna operate two times a day, Monday to Saturday, from Wallis Hihifo Airport, taking approximately one hour.

We recommend arranging a vehicle delivery to the airport, which is the most convenient option. Otherwise, your accommodation can arrange transfers.

Getting Settled

Dining Recommendations

If you have arrived in Wallis with time to spare for lunch, we recommend Beach Club (Bord de Mer, Liku) for a front-row seat to the lagoon and its motu from the restaurant's deck. Their Pacific-French fusion cuisine is also a strong start to the territory's dining scene.

For dinner, Maloccino (Mata'Utu - opposite Hotel Lomipeau) is one of the island's most revered options and a nice way to treat yourself as you slip into holiday mode.

That's right, we're not wasting any time sending you to Futuna. The reason being that flight schedules are fickle and it's always best to do Futuna early in your trip in case you are delayed heading back to Wallis.

After breakfast (we recommend Snack Ugatai if your accommodation doesn't include breakfast), head to Hihifo Airport around one hour before your scheduled departure flight. Then enjoy the scenic views as you soar over the Wallis Lagoon and land with twin-island views of Futuna and Alofi as you land in Vele Pointe Airport.

Again, getting your rental vehicle delivered to the airport is usually the most straightforward option, though some accommodations can provide airport transfers if needed.

Getting Settled: Part Two (and Beach or Hiking Time)

Considering the flights are usually in the morning, you have time to settle into your accommodation and enjoy some beach time and snorkelling (if you have brought your own).

You might want to enjoy the coasts of Afiafi Hotel and Somalama Hotel, which are located right on the beach. Otherwise, if you're staying north, Piscine Bleue is a good option. Or, if you're closer to the south, Vele Beach is our recommendation. Both options are Ok at any tide if you're just swimming close to shore, but if you want to head out snorkelling, only go with fins at high incoming tide. Le Petit Musée des Fagāna

Le Petit Musée des Fagāna offers one of Wallis's most accessible cultural experiences, teaching local legends in thought-provoking ways. Founded by Rebecca Kulimoetoke to preserve Wallisian culture, this intimate museum features two exhibitions illustrating the rich mythology of Wallis and Futuna.

Traditional seating on woven mats creates an authentic storytelling atmosphere. The museum presents creation myths, monster legends and historical narratives in Wallisian and French for self-guided tours, with guided experiences available in French and English. Uvea Museum Association

The Uvea Museum Association maintains a fascinating collection chronicling 1942-1946 when nearly 6,000 American GIs transformed Wallis Island. Founded by a passionate local collector, curator Christophe Laurent now offers guided tours through Wallis Voyages.

The collection features uniforms, weapons, letters, Coca-Cola bottles and artefacts found across Wallis. US forces expected Japanese occupation but discovered 6,000 peaceful Wallisians, doubling the population.
