7-Day Trip to Wallis and Futuna: Including Both Islands!

Heading to the edge of the earth for a seven-day Wallis & Futuna trip? You've come to the right place.

Seven days gives you just enough time to squeeze in all three islands in this remote Pacific paradise: Wallis, Futuna, and the stunning volcanic island of Alofi. According to our very own travel manager, Robin, whilst this timeframe is more action-packed and doesn't leave much time for rest, it's perfectly doable for those wanting to experience everything these French territories have to offer.

Here's a travel tip we've learned from experience: start your seven-day Wallis and Futuna itinerary on Futuna first. Trust us on this one. Flight delays getting back to Wallis for your departure are surprisingly common, and you'll thank yourself for building in that buffer.

This itinerary is designed around self-drive exploration (the freedom to discover hidden lagoons and ancient archaeological sites at your own pace is unbeatable), though we've included our favourite guided tour recommendations for those special experiences you won't want to miss.

From sorting out inter-island transport and uncovering the best snorkelling spots to finding the most comfortable accommodation and tracking down the islands' most delicious local dishes, we've got every detail of your Wallis and Futuna adventure covered.

How to Get Around Wallis and Futuna in 7 Days

This 7-day Wallis and Futuna itinerary includes travel on both islands, as well as between islands. Here's a quick rundown on how to get around Wallis and Futuna in 7 days.

Road Transport in Wallis and Futuna

The first road transport you'll encounter on each of the islands you visit is your airport transfer. This must be booked in advance with your accommodation or get your rental vehicle delivered to the airport.

Speaking of car rental, as there is no public transport in Wallis and Futuna, renting a high-clearance vehicle like an SUV is your most viable option for reaching the sights and attractions. Get advice on car hire from What You Need to Hire a Car in Wallis and Futuna.

Your only other alternatives are to pair bicycle hire, hiking and guided tours, which you can learn more about in The Ultimate Guide to Cycling in Wallis & Futuna and the 5 Best Sightseeing Tours in Wallis & Futuna.

Interisland Transport in Wallis and Futuna

The primary way to get between the island of Wallis and the island of Futuna is via domestic flights. Flights to Futuna operate two times a day, Monday to Saturday, from Wallis Hihifo Airport, taking approximately one hour.

Check out the approximate airfares and more in our guide, Domestic Flights in Wallis and Futuna.

For getting from the main island of Wallis to the outer motu (islets) or for getting between Futuna and the island of Alofi, water taxis, locally known as "taxi boats", are available.

Learn more about taxi boats in How to Catch a Water Taxi in Wallis & Futuna + 5 Best Taxi Boats.

Day 1 - Arrive in Wallis and Explore Mata'Utu

Welcome to Wallis! Nothing quite prepares you for that spectacular landing, where the azure lagoon stretched beneath you.

The airport is refreshingly small, so you'll breeze through the arrivals process with customs and biosecurity. Get yourself prepped with our Arriving in Wallis & Futuna: Airport Customs, Biosecurity & Arrival Process guide.

We recommend arranging a vehicle delivery to the airport, which is the most convenient option. Otherwise, your accommodation can arrange transfers.

Getting Settled in Wallis

Settle into your accommodation, and you may even want to cool off with a swim if you're staying at Hotel Lomipeau or Hôtel l'Albatros. If you're staying at a homestay/guesthouse, you may want to get acquainted with your local hosts!

For your first night, we recommend staying either in town or by the airport so you're close to both the airport for departure to Futuna tomorrow, as well as sightseeing and dining options around Mata'Utu.

After you've settled in, do a bit of easy sightseeing around Mata'Utu, which can also be paired with lunch.

Explore Mata’Utu

Start your self-guided Wallis road trip in Mata’Utu, the small capital of Wallis and the best place to ease into the island’s mix of faith, royalty and everyday life. Your first stop is Mata’Utu Cathedral, the grand waterfront landmark that dominates the town and stands as one of the island’s most recognisable sights. Right beside it, you’ll also see the Royal Palace of Uvea, a reminder that Wallis is not only part of a French overseas territory, but also home to the living customary kingdom of Uvea.

Before hitting the road, take a few minutes to pop into the Philatelic Service, a fun little stop for stamp collectors and curious travellers alike. Wallis and Futuna is known for its beautifully designed stamps, and they make a surprisingly meaningful souvenir from one of the South Pacific’s least visited territories.

From Mata’Utu, continue south on RT 3 until you reach the roundabout, then take the first main dirt road on your left up the hill to Mt Holo and Carmel De St Therese Convent. This detour is worth it for one of the best viewpoints on Wallis, with panoramic views across the lagoon and motu, making it a great place to pause, take photos and get a better sense of the island’s geography.

Where to Stay: Mid-Range Accommodation

All of these options are detailed in our comprehensive Where to Stay in Wallis: 10 Best Accommodations guide.

Dining Recommendations

If you have arrived in Wallis with time to spare for lunch, we recommend Beach Club (Bord de Mer, Liku) for a front-row seat to the lagoon and its motu from the restaurant's deck. Their Pacific-French fusion cuisine is also a strong start to the territory's dining scene.

For dinner, Maloccino (Mata'Utu - opposite Hotel Lomipeau) is one of the island's most revered options and a nice way to treat yourself as you slip into holiday mode.

Day 2 - Fly to Futuna + Futuna Road Trip

That's right, we're not wasting any time sending you to Futuna. The reason being that flight schedules are fickle and it's always best to do Futuna early in your trip in case you are delayed heading back to Wallis.

After breakfast (we recommend Snack Ugatai if your accommodation doesn't include breakfast), head to Hihifo Airport around one hour before your scheduled departure flight. Then enjoy the scenic views as you soar over the Wallis Lagoon and land with twin-island views of Futuna and Alofi as you land in Vele Pointe Airport.

Again, getting your rental vehicle delivered to the airport is usually the most straightforward option, though some accommodations can provide airport transfers if needed.

Futuna Road Trip

Because flights arrive in Futuna in the morning (though we recommend the earliest one to get the best start to exploring Futuna), you have the time to start doing some sightseeing. You have two options:

  1. Drive yourself using A Self-Guided Day Trip on Futuna: One Day Itinerary
  2. Take a guided tour with Mataga Me'a o Futuna Eco Tourisme

The former allows you to go at your own pace and choose the sights you're interested in, while the latter will provide more context about the historical and cultural sites around Futuna.

Either way, some of the sights you can squeeze into your day include:

Things to Do on Futuna

  • Let your imagination run wild at Fai'umu O Pāpā
  • Check out Tuatafa Black Sand Beach and snorkel in its blue hole
  • Browse Futuan arts and crafts at Gie Fatua
  • Soak in the historical ambience of Anakele
  • Admire Poï Basilica and the Saint Pierre Chanel Museum
  • Soak in the island views from Mataki'uvea
  • Step onto the Escaliers Tongien
  • Check out the Vaini Tomb

For more on these attractions, check out the 20 Best Things to Do on Futuna.

Check in at Your Accommodation

Wrap up your day by checking into your chosen guesthouse or hotel. We've listed a few accommodations below.

Where to Stay: Budget Accommodation

  • Happy Place
  • Faleafe

Where to Stay: Mid-Range Accommodation

All of these options are detailed in our comprehensive Where to Stay in Futuna: The Best Accommodations guide.

Dining Recommendations

If you need a lunch stop, we recommend picking up a sandwich or baguette from one of the supermarkets to take to the beach - see the Information, Shops & Services on Futuna, though get there before 11:30/12 pm before stores close.

An easy option for your first day in Futuna is to dine at the hotel you're staying at, where Afiafi Hotel, Somalama Hotel and Fiafia Hotel all have a restaurant. Otherwise, Snack Non-Stop is a reliable option in Nuku, near the main town centre, open for lunch and dinner.

Our tip: stop in La Cuisine or Chez Malia Ana to book your table for tomorrow's escapade, as booking for these home-dining experiences is essential.

Learn more about dining on Futuna from The Food Guide to Futuna: Places to Eat & Food Tours.

Day 3 - Alofi Island

You can't visit Futuna without spending at least a day on Alofi Island! Pick up some lunch and snacks for your day trip from the supermarché before you head to the Vele Boat Ramp (Embarcadère).

The most foolproof way to get to the island is to book a taxi boat transfer with Taxi Boat Afala, which also offers guided boat tours around the islands. Otherwise, you might be lucky to catch a water taxi at the boat ramp.

Check out A Self-Guided Day Trip on Alofi: One Day Itinerary for a good way to spend your day on the island. Otherwise, pick and choose from the list of things to do.

Things to Do on Alofi

  • Take a taxi boat tour of Alofi (or Futuna) with Taxi Boat Afala or Tautai Taxi Boat
  • Hike to Loka Cave and back
  • Hike to Sa'avaka Beach and back
  • Take a shorter hike to Ganiu Beach and back
  • Relax, swim and snorkel at Alofitai Beach
  • Snorkel at L'Aquarium
  • Check out the Chapelle d'Alofi

For even more details, also check out the 20 Best Things to Do on Futuna.

Dining Recommendations

On Alofi, you'll need to be independent when it comes to food, so take plenty of food and water to the island. Again, more about self-catering can be found in A Guide to Supermarkets & Food Shopping in Wallis & Futuna.

Tonight, and as we hinted at yesterday, we highly recommend one of the home-dining experiences, either from the French duo Patrick and Vincent at La Cuisine in Nuku or the local seafood extravaganza from Malia Ana and Chez Malia Ana in Vele. Bookings are essential.

If you want to be more flexible, Bambou Restaurant in Leava is a reliable option specialising in seafood.

Day 4 - Futuna to Wallis

This morning, say goodbye to Futuna as you fly from Pointe Vele Airport back to Wallis and enjoy those atoll views all over again! Pick up your vehicle from the airport and hit the road to your next accommodation.

You can spice things up by choosing a different stay than last time, which opens up some of the southern island stays. Either way, your options are as follows:

Where to Stay: Budget Accommodation

Where to Stay: Mid-Range Accommodation

All of these options are detailed in our comprehensive Where to Stay in Wallis: 10 Best Accommodations guide.

Explore Wallis' Museum and Art Gallery

Take it easy this afternoon by immersing in the history and culture of Wallis at the island's galleries/museums.

Le Petit Musée des Fagāna

Le Petit Musée des Fagāna offers one of Wallis's most accessible cultural experiences, teaching local legends in thought-provoking ways. Founded by Rebecca Kulimoetoke to preserve Wallisian culture, this intimate museum features two exhibitions illustrating the rich mythology of Wallis and Futuna.

Traditional seating on woven mats creates an authentic storytelling atmosphere. The museum presents creation myths, monster legends and historical narratives in Wallisian and French for self-guided tours, with guided experiences available in French and English. Discover fascinating fāgāna (legends), including creation stories, demon tales featuring Taligafetoho and Kofukula, and sacred kava ceremony origins.

Open from 9 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 4 pm, Monday to Friday.

Uvea Museum Association

The Uvea Museum Association maintains a fascinating collection chronicling 1942-1946 when nearly 6,000 American GIs transformed Wallis Island. Founded by a passionate local collector, curator Christophe Laurent now offers guided tours through Wallis Voyages.

The collection features uniforms, weapons, letters, Coca-Cola bottles and artefacts found across Wallis. US forces expected Japanese occupation but discovered 6,000 peaceful Wallisians, doubling the population. Though no battles occurred, the Americans built transformative infrastructure including roads still used today and the current airport.

Dining Recommendations

Celebrate the official beginning of your Wallis exploration with sundown cocktails and dinner at Koko Bay, located in Vailala in the north of the island.

Alternatively, you can stock up on supplies from the island's supermarchés and prepare your own meals. For a complete rundown of your food options across Wallis, check out The Food Guide to Wallis: Places to Eat & Food Tours.

Day 5 - Eastern Motu Trip

The lagoon and motu are the most naturally stunning aspects of Wallis, so we highly recommend exploring them for at least two days.

The eastern motu are perhaps the most-viewed, with its large islets of Luaniva and Fugalei ever visible from Mata'Utu.

You can either spend the day on Tekaviki, Nukuhione or Nukuhifala (learn what makes each one special in the 15 Best Islets (Motu) to Visit in Wallis), or do some island-hopping via a snorkelling tour or watersports tour.

Association Vaka La - Snorkel and Watersports Tours

Association Vaka La offers catamaran tours, kayak rentals, snorkelling adventures and full moon experiences in Wallis' stunning lagoon. We love their welcoming, flexible approach; personalised tours for small groups and relaxed booking via phone or walk-in. Standout snorkelling at Devil's Hole and Turtle Hole.

Their taxi boat service accesses secluded islets like Tekaviki, Nukuhifala and Nukuhione.

Learn more about their paddling adventures in Kayaking & Paddleboarding in Wallis & Futuna.

A Vaka Heke - Paddling Tour of the Eastern Motu

A Vaka Heke offers guided tours departing from Mata'Utu, which gives you the choice of either kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, surfskis or traditional va'a (outrigger canoes) for a duration of your choosing, whether it's a couple of hours to a full day.

Learn more about their tours and book your experience at the A Vaka Heke website.

Dining Recommendations

On a road trip, Chez Youyou is always a reliable option as the only Asian restaurant in the territory, combined with its awesome lagoon views.

While not exactly a food option, you can enjoy the local brew at the Brasserie Wallis et Futuna in the south or head to Au Container in the north for a rustic open-air bar on the coast.

Day 6 - Northern Motu Cultural Tour or Southern Motu Snorkel/Dive/Day Trip

Another day on the water! You have a choice of either a cultural island-hopping tour of the northern motu with Havili Siliva (though this is better for groups than couples or solo travellers) or doing some snorkelling or even scuba diving at the southern motu with Evasion Bleue.

Both operators can also offer taxi boat transfers if you'd rather spend the day marooned on an uninhabited islet.

Learn more about how taxi boats work in How to Catch a Water Taxi in Wallis & Futuna + 5 Best Taxi Boats.

Havili Siliva - Northern Motu Tour

Experience traditional Polynesian sailing with Havili Siliva on outrigger canoe adventures to northern motu.

These full-day excursions combine modern convenience with ancient traditions, featuring fresh fruit breakfasts, coconut milk preparation, umu cooking, archaeological exploration, lei making, snorkelling and traditional dancing.

Tours require six people minimum, so expect potential delays until numbers are reached.

Learn more about this incredible experience in the 10 Best Boat & Sailing Tours in Wallis & Futuna.

Evasion Bleue - Southern Motu Snorkelling or Scuba Diving

Evasion Bleue, Wallis' only dive centre, offers professional scuba diving and snorkelling tours with qualified instructor Pascal.

Explore 15 incredible dive sites, including vibrant coral gardens, wartime wrecks, and dramatic passes like Avatolu Pass. Weekend trips venture outside the lagoon while weekdays feature intimate lagoon dives. Historical highlights include Samuel Wallis' 1763 anchor at 42 m (138 ft) and a preserved 1944 American military barge.

Three-hour snorkelling adventures to Islet St Christophe and water taxi services are also available.

Learn more about diving with Evasion Bleue in The Best Dive Shops & Operators in Wallis & Futuna.

Dining Recommendations

For your final night in Wallis and Futuna, a more upscale "treat yourself" option is Le Teone, boasting excellent views of the Mata'Utu waterfront. From sashimi and grilled entrecôte to local-style sides like cassava fries and taro fries, this family-run establishment offers a delightful combination of local and international cuisine.

Day 7 - Southern Sightseeing, Craft Shopping and Departure

For your final day in Wallis and Futuna, we recommend taking the evening departure flight to wrap up your time with some essential sightseeing.

Southern Wallis Sightseeing

Start with Lake Lanutavake, a charming crater lake that serves as the perfect warm-up to the island's volcanic wonders. Then journey to the breathtaking Lake Lalolalo, where you'll stand at the edge of a perfectly circular crater lake that drops 80 m (262 ft) into an emerald abyss. It's so geometrically perfect it almost defies nature.

Your cultural exploration continues at the magnificent Chapel of St Bernadette in Lausikula, dramatically carved into the cliff face. Cap off your adventure at Kolonui Fort, the world's best-preserved Tongan fort, where centuries of Pacific history come alive.

For the complete route details, timings and insider tips, check out A Self-Guided Day Trip on Wallis: One Day Itinerary.

Craft and Souvenir Shopping in Wallis

If you want something to remember Wallis and Futuna by, have a browse of the traditional crafts at The Association Femmes Artisanes Taofikemau with woven bags and shell necklaces, or Atuhakevalu, which throws more carvings and hand-painted attire into the mix. For something more contemporary, Veitogo Tapa incorporates traditional motifs in modern printing and embroidery souvenirs.

Check out The Guide to Shopping in Wallis & Futuna + 10 Best Places to Shop for ideas.

Departure

Remember to arrive at Hihifo International Airport 2 hours before your scheduled departure time, so you have enough time to return your rental vehicle, check in (which can go slowly), and go through security.
